Background

In a survey, NOWZUWAN has found 5% of total population of Patiya upazila in Chittagong. In the survey, we have found that 3739 PWDS out of 760000 of total population. Interesting point, 576 persons of that are under 12 years of age and 2076 of them are female.( survey-2008,Patiya).Where in the year 2001,NOWZUWAN has found 1074 female persons out of 1976 PWDS.

Executing Organization: NOWZUWAN (An Organization of Social Development)

Aim: Socio economic development and empowerment of the Persons with Disability living in project area

Objective

• Rehabilitate Socially
• To remove poverty
• To create employment opportunity 
• To create suitable environment of work for the disabled
• To train disabled people for income generating activities
• To create opportunity for education and medical treatment of the disabled
• To create suitable opportunity for movement of the disabled
• To undertake extensive programs regarding awareness for prevention of disability 
Bringing back accessibility to Person with Disability (PWDs) who do not have the access in the main stream of life through improving their economic system and social status in the project area.

Working Area

Patiya Upazilla-22 union and a municipal area, under Chittagong District and Chittagong City Corporation of Bangladesh.

No. of Beneficiary (direct): 488, (F=125 M=287 C=71)

Target Group: Poor and hardcore poor PWDs- Persons with Disable (PWDs), who do not have the access in the main steam life through social status & movement and economic system. Especially; hardcore poor Women and Children with Disable.

I. Disability Resource Centre- (DRC): Financial grant from Japan Embassy for Building Construction (1st floor) in 2009 March

IV. Regular awareness meetings at school, college and Madrasha on disability issue 01 School each month..
V. Till now 720 handicap/ PWDs have got rehabilitation therapy, wheel chair, spec tables, stretcher and provide service and treatment. 
VI. Provided to PWDs sewing machines, embroidery equipments, small business facility to make them self reliant as I.G.A. support.
VII. Products made of PWDs have marketed, displayed by NOWZUWAN te 
VIII. Provided Scholarships as assistance to 25 CWDs and make sure of inclusive education for 03 CWDs students.
IX. Assistant Advocacy & Networking Officer of Disability & Development Program, Jahan Ara Begum Hena was selected as a Resource Addresser at National Conference for Disability arranged by NFOWD in 2008.

Awareness, Advocacy and Networking at local level

NOWZUWAN maintains close relationships with local government and non-government agencies, local development organizations, club, journalists, professional groups and civil society such as local elected person, local elite, and the richest as well as kind hearted person towards PWDs. We would actively lobby professional bodies to improve participation of PWD’s in their development agendas maximizing our network and good relationship we have been established so far. We will also include all local PWDs, their parents and caregivers for awareness of the issue. Through active advocacy, we aim to encourage community to reconstruct negative values and beliefs regarding PWDs, and to empower PWD’s and facilitate their participation in the decision making processes in the community as well as national level. We also aim to actively participate in international disability day, all memorable national day, and organize disablity fair at union level to draw more attention towards PWDs.

DISABLE SELF-HELP ORGANIZATION (Pilot Program)

Location: Patiya Upazila.in Chittagong,Bangladesh.

Aim: Enhancing the life opportunities of persons with disable (PWDs) in 20 union and 01 municipal area through formation of Disable Self Help Organizations.

Object:
 To ensure a better life style for PWDs
 To remove unemployment from society
 To create job market for YWDs
 To bring the backward society in main stream 
 To achieve self reliance
 To encourage the Youth towards self employment
 To develop, micro entrepreneur such as market linkage and market promotion
 To the attainment of the objectives or any of them of the partner non government organizations

ROOTS (Pilot program)

ROOTS is a organization under Disable Self Help Organization Project of NOWZUWAN Disability and Development Program. It is a self help organization ie, a self employment facility. NOWZUWAN has introduce this project in 2001.ROOTS is a enterprise where PWDs manufacture clothes, handicrafts etc and sell. Like ROOTS, NOWZUWAN has started six new self help organizations in different unions of Patiya upazila in Chittagong district.
ROOTS has made an agreement with a foreign group to export their product.

DRC- DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTRE

Location: Khanmohona Union of Patiya upazila in Chittagong, Bangladesh

Aim:
Socio economic development and to make sure the improved lifestyle and empowerment of Persons with Disability (PWDs).

Object:
 To expand education in PWDS
 To build a skilled PWDs society
 Emarging leadership in PWDs
 Need based trining fir PWDs.
 A receation centre for PWDs
 A Social right based commune for PWDs
 To ensure a better life style for PWDs
 To remove unemployment from society

 To provide contributions from all part of the society
 .To develop future human resources as efficient and capable to coping with latest challenges

Disability Resource Centre-DRC is a Project under NOWZUWAN Disability and Development Program. It is a four (4) stored building planed for PWDs. In this building, NOWZUWAN is planning to provide. a Vocational Training centre, a especial CWDs school and a hostel For 40 CWDs students. DRC also contains a Recreation centre for CWDs.
NOWZUWAN is raising fond for DRC. For this, NOWZUWAN is giving land and hopping fond from different donor / resource organizations

Management System

NOWZUWAN now has two core staff members and five volunteers who are directly involved in disability interventions. Among the core group of staff, 2 members had received a long-term training on disability issues from Centre for Disability in Development (CDD). They are now providing Primary Rehabilitation Therapy (PRT) services & others to a number of PWDs in Patiya Upazilla. Together with above mentioned staffs who have been already working on disability issue, we plan to appoint more trained staffs especially for physiotherapy and DRC project.

In total, NOWZUWAN has four (4) PWDs working as full-time office staffs and ten (10) more PWDs are worming as volunteer in different programs and projects. Most exiting theme for Disability & Development Program is that NOWZUWAN has a PWDs in their general committee.

01. Amina has a happy family

NAME: AMINA AKHTAR AGE: 24 /F /married
Husband: Moyna Mia Mother: Sayla Khatun.
Address: Taltola, Haidgaon Union, Patiya

Current Status: Can move –walk and have three (3) cows in small dairy. 
Description
Amina was the 3rd daughter of her parents. She was physical disabled from her born. Her poor farmer father could not give her any special assistance she needed.
NOWZUWAN in 2001 has started to give her PRT by NOWZUWAN CHDRP and also gave her training on sewing work. In 2002 and she got married with a trainer under the understanding of both their family. In 2005 NOWZUWAN provided her a cow with bulk, from IGA program of NOWZUWAN.
Amina Begum is a proud mother of two beautiful children and living a comfortable life with her family.

02.Nurul Islam has become an icon

NAME: NURUL ISLAM AGE 32 / M /married.

Description
Nurul Islam was an YPWD when has come in touch with NOWZUWAN. His financial condition was not good; he was living hand to mouth.
NOWZUWAN has provided him training on sewing work and gave a plan, how to operate a small scale shop in 2003.
In 2004, he has started to work in a sewing centre provided by NOWZUWAN.In 2006, Nurul Islam has got IGA Loan from NOWZUWAN.IGA loan is a special program for PWDs where PWDs can get loan in a very low interest.
Nurul Islam is now a proud owner of a mobile call centre.

03. A Cleaved Lip Operation can create conjugal binding.

Description
Khorsida was born with cleaved lip. It was a disaster for her lower middle class family. As she was living in village, it become a daily routine that she was a bad luck and negligence of society peole.But it become harsh when all her marriage proposals has become unsuccessful due to her lips.
NOWZUWAN after getting this poor sad news, decided to help her out.
NOWZUWAN arranged a surgery at Chittagong Maa O Sishu Hospital of her cleaved lips.
After haviing the surgery she was so delighted and her family was so grateful that could not say a word.
Next year Khorsida got married with an emigrant young man.

04.Noyon is going out

Description: 
Sabu and Srity got married in the year 1995.In 1999;Srity gave birth of a son. It was great news for them but all their happiness became dust when they found their new child is a disabled child.
As they are not capable of expenses, young child NOYON was not getting any extra care.
In 2006, NOWZUWAN team has identified him while he was passing idol times in home. Noyon, that tine, was not in a school He never could follow the school atmosphere.
NOWZUWAN had decided to rehabilitee him. From March ’06, Noyon has started to get PRT services by NOWZUWAN CHDRP. Same year he was provided a Hearing aid from NOWZUWAN. Next year, he was included in a non-Formal Primary Education School of NOWZUWAN.
NOWZUWAN is promoting him PRT, School facility. And Tutor along with tuition fees. 
Sabu and Srity are very happy and say,” My son is going school with other kids and playing, atleast moving with others. It is a great view for us.”

05. Alvee’s mother has a hope now

Description
Alvee is he eldest son of Mr. And Mrs. Mabut. As mabut a carpenter in profession, it was very difficult for him to maintain the cost of his Alvee’s treatment Realizing this factor NOWZUWAN Disability and Development Program has started to give Alvee PRT services from2007.
Now, Alvee can move his legs and balance his head by his own self. NOWZUWAN has provided a Corner Chair to Alvee in 2008.
Alvee’s mother Rokeya has a hope about the future of her child and wishing that within next few years Alvee will join a school.
